I picked up a 4-speed TR7 gearstick many years ago thinking it would make a useful spare for the Marina item...but it was designed for the pin on the other side, making it next to useless without major surgery on stick or box (and that pin did not want to come out!).

I have not yet checked part numbers, but who is to say that on some cars the driving position was not such a long reach to the gearshift as in a Roadster, and the gear sticks were actually angled a different way. There are certainly a range, mostly Triumph, of cars from Heralds, Dolomites TR7's, Marina and Itals that usead the same single rail gearbox design.
40 years on, who is to be sure that the part you are looking at is actually what it purports to be!

The number on the item is 22G 1586.

Which is from a Triumph Spitfire 1500 MK4.

Resolved, my two gearboxes are from a morris marina which has a number 22G 1585 as is the gear lever which has the pin on the opposite side.

Albeit when turned around by 180 degrees it does fit but with the lever pointing in the wrong direction.

Looks like the MG Midget is the same as the Triumph with the gear stick locating pin on the same side as the reverse switch.
The Marina and Ital is on the opposite side.

That looks better as it has a mounting bracket as well.
What model is that off?
Ah yes Spitfire with overdrive. I must learn to pay attention. Doh!

And if you need something to keep the bar in alignment then you could use a Pillow Block Bearing.

It looks like it would make it easier and more secure if it was mounted to the tunnel as well. Food for thought.

Just re-read your post above with the part numbers.
Both my extensions are part number 22G 1586 with the pin on the opposite side to the reverse switch. I thought I had the Marina gearboxes but not now. At least I know what to look for when I need parts.

I was looking on the Web and found this.

Now look very carefully at the gearstick base, I think you will find that to be a track rod end.

Looking at it , I still would connect the base to the tunnel with some bobbin bolts to allow for more movement and fabricate some type of reverse gate.

Food for thought though.

That looks a good idea and another use for a track rod end but as you said a way of selecting reverse would be additional work to the project.

Nice job. As I recall from building my LocUst over riding reverse on the box was not a problem. Avoiding reverse was. A detent gate on the extension was an interesting exercise. Last winter I started a similar idea for my roadster but life got in the way and it got binned. I will have another go this winter.
