Re: New Gearbox lever thread - revised

    Hi Mike

Yep thought of that and didn't want another point of ingress for water to penetrate.

The thickness of the steel allows for the ball joint to clear the Ali underneath and therefore no hole.

There is a small hole in the steel plate to allow movement of the ball joint.

    Regards

    Adrian

That is a beautifully elegant solution.

I’m just a little bit worried that the ball joint is made of an alloy that is difficult to weld and may be a weakness. Could it be bolted to the plate? Also, being a bit obvious, can the horizontal threads be locked sufficiently to stop them shifting in a vigorous gear change?

Never thought a gear lever thread could be so riveting.

            Hiya

I chose zinc plated steel ones from http://www.wdsltd.co.uk/product/3297...71752-wds-551/ so they can be welded if you prefer.

Got the rose joint from McGill and it is carbon steel so no problem with welding.

Copious use of locktite seems to have done the job, mind you its the industrial stuff.

Re: New Gearbox lever thread - revised

              Hi all

I would like to thank everyone who has read this thread and contributed ideas and comments, without these I wouldn't have come to the solution I did.

I am more than happy for anyone to use the information gathered as I am sure many, if not all, of these ideas would work.

I am specially thankful to my mate Andy who came up with the reverse idea.

              Many minds make great work.

This is what this forum is all about.

              Long live MOC.

Thanks to you Adrian. You motivated me to rethink my idea for an extension. I have spent time looking for bits to do something similar, it is coming on . Photos when done. The reverse detent spring was a stroke of genius, just as I had worked out a sliding collar detent!

Look forward to seeing the photos.

As I said some, if not all, would work and I am still interested to find out how others have resolved the issue.

                  Keep them coming.

Re: New Gearbox lever thread - revised

This is my interpretation for a selector extension.
Started of with a few bits and pieces.

                    EA7AC0C2-DEC1-4DEB-8F5B-C66FC97AC201.jpeg

                    A37401C4-FBE8-4D98-A116-BD83737BE929.jpeg

Dusted off the welder and ended up with this.

                    66388123-34FB-4271-9537-403C2C5B2774.jpeg

Turned down some nylon bar then press fitted and added a 10mm sleeve to give me an internal diameter of 8mm.

                    C36CB45A-1D91-4E80-A67B-B91AFFB02262.jpeg

                    8ED92A16-4FB0-4DD3-80EE-CBA2AC72DC72.jpeg

And ended up with this, yet to finish off and fit. I have the Triumph spitfire gearbox extension and as we now know the locating pin is on the other side to the Marina one and I ended up welding the bracket on the wrong way around (Double Doh!) so made another bracket ready to replace the balls’d up one. Yet to find some angle to mount the rose joint inside the tunnel and extend the gear lever and fit the knob (no not me) then some paint and fit.

Re: New Gearbox lever thread - revised

                        All painted and bolted together.

                        C89339DC-537C-441B-84EB-A0A0B2F29F63.jpeg

Just put in place to check and works well. I tried to keep the pivot points the same so the bar stays level’ish.

Now to sort the reverse gate, think I will use Adrian’s idea with the spring over and extended bolt.

wow that looks fantastic. I'm glad it has worked out.

I love it when we all get together and help each other and come up with so many resolutions to a single problem.

                          Well done that man.

                          Another solution

                          Regards,.

Thanks Adrian and thanks for the donor casing to get mine back to original.
Also thanks to Hugh as this is almost the same as his solution.
Most of it done with bits of old scrap from the metal skip at work, think I will visit the skip more often as it can be a gold mine.
Any one else with your ideas?

Better add this to my build diary to keep it in order.
