  • A bit of electrical genius and Sierra know how required, please.

My Cabrio column stalks have been replaced by dash switches...and I want to change them back, partially. I want to re-fit a slightly modified Sierra indicator and dip/main beam lever to the mountings on the column. I have acquired a suitable assembly complete with multiplugs and about 15cm length of wires and in my plan the Hazard Warning Switch will be removed as the dash mounted replacement works perfectly well. (There is no horn-push on the end of my replacement particular stalk and the existing horn button is dash mounted and OK as is. My only problem with the existing arrangement is really the dip / main beam headlamp change requires one hand off the steering wheel to rotate a knob in one direction or the other, and I'm just not happy with the idea of one hand off the wheel. I've taken the intended replacement stork assembly to pieces and the next job will be to cut the hazard warning part of the switch body away. Of course, being a mass produced item, there is an etched PCB connection to the hazard warning switch which i shall be cutting off....so I need to know if any re-soldering / insulating of contacts will be required. I also need to know which wires on the multi plugs do which jobs. My assumption is that there is one live feed to the switch assembly and the earth connection is found by each switch performing its function. I have various multimeters but I'm not (if I'm entirely honest) quite sure where to start....so any help / advice would be greatly appreciated.
    THANK YOU! Bill

Mmmmm. That could take you some while Bill. Without detailed knowledge of the various switch units that Ford used during the Sierra production run I would start by identifying the wiring colours that go to the existing switches. Then trawl through Sierra wiring diagrams and see if you can match the wire colours to any of those. That assumes that the wires are original Ford ones! If someone has extended those to the new switches you will need to trace back to the Ford bit. Peter.

Pins used on the dipswitch are
      15 Brown, to earth
56a Brown/white to main beam relay
56b Brown/Yellow to dipped beam relay
      56 Brown/Black to lighting switch
      You may find this useful.

Re: A bit of electrical genius and Sierra know how required, please.

Thanks, Pete and Chris that's all very useful, helpful and informative. Two multi-plugs connect to the stalk...the smaller one ( a single row of terminals) has wires attached that precisely match the coding above...the larger one ( a double row of terminals) is clearly the indicators side of things, with individual wires hopefully identifiable function-wise by tracing the pins to which they connect into the inside of the switching unit. As to the removal of the hazard warning assembly, as there is a replacement switch for this on the dash which I don't intend to disturb at all, I'm advised that there shouldn't be any need to re-solder anything. That part of the PCB being already by-passed. We shall see!
        Thanks again,
        Bill
PS Any other advice / information gratefully and appreciatively received!

I fitted a hazard switch on the dash. When it came to the standard switch I just cut the hazard button off flush, no disassembly required. Then I made a new steering column cover as the original had the hole for the hazard button.

THANK YOU Scott....that's exactly what I want to do and now I know that it should work out OK because you've supplied the confirmation I needed.

              Bill,
From the Haynes manual and notes from Premier wiring (who supplied then loom)
Red is permanent live. Pin 30
              Ignition switched live (54)
Bk/Gn is to the RH set of lamps (pin R)
Bk/W is to the left set of lamps (pin L)
Bk/R is supply to flasher relay (49)
Bk/W is output from flasher relay (49a)

I have attached a image taken from the Haynes manual

              I hope this helps

                Chris,

I'm not sure which/what manual I need for the Hunter. Can you let us know which Haynes manual you bought please?

                Cheers,

                  Colin,
I had the standard Haynes Ford Sierra manual, but it fell apart and was covered in oil! However a quick google for "haynes ford sierra manual pdf" will throw up several sites from which you can download the manual which is what I did when I needed it.
