  • Marina & Dolomite rear axle breather

I have removed the threaded part now from my axle and note how incredibly thin the thickness of the pastic is and it would appear that this part is too flimsy and the new replacement is likely to fail shortly after also.

Its fitted on the offside of the casing, perhaps yours is already missing?

Has anyone replaced this with the Landrover part which is made of brass ?
The thread size is 1/8 BSP

My further research into this has revealed that others share my concerns, I attach the following article:

I recommend Marlin owners using Marina axles to upgrade to a brass valve to prevent their diffs suffering from dirt ingress and premature failure.

When I overhauled my axle I used a pipe union to poly. tube and a plastic fuel filter. Initially had it on the axle as in the pic but moved it up to the body as it dripped condensate when on the axle. Works well now.

Thanks for posting your Rear axle breather set up. It looks more akin to a 4x4 off Road set up. I was considering a similar setup however,in your experience of Roadster ownership , will this be necessary for a fair weather car?
(apart from when an area is subjected to severe flooding or use as a trails car)

Like you I found the plastic ones broke easily and wanted to fit something stronger, i.e. a metal pipe union. I also found that the origional dripped oil vapour so went for the elongated tube taken high up with a filter to keep out dirt. Has been working well for a few years now.

The 2 brass breather valves arrived today from:
            https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Front-and...4AAOSwSnFZoAcK

They are genuine Landrover parts in Britpart packaging.

It took less than 5 minutes to unscrew the plastic valve from the axle , apply ptfe tape and using a 15mm open ended spanner fit the replacement.
the brass set up that is the same thread size Which is much better because not only is it stronger but it has a 1-way ball bearing valve that only allows vapour to travel out of the axle but closes to stop water ingress. Which may be useful if you end up driving through water logged roads.
