Thanks, that's what I had thought!

ok, another quick question, split the brake cylinder from the servo chamber to enable a little renovation of the servo chamber, coat of paint etc and a brass wire brush of the cylinder etc what grease do I use when reassembling, cannot find any refs, , white grease or special brake grease?

The only place I would expect to see grease in there is between the servo plunger and the rear of the master cylinder piston. Only use the red rubber grease for anything inside the hydraulic parts. Use sparingly!

yeap, that's the place, so red rubber or other variety?

Re: Yellow topped relay sierra origin fuse box

Ok thanks for the info, now, just to clarify in my mind, when separated, the chamber on the front of the servo , surrounding the sealing edge and also on the pushrod ball was a whitish grease, quite thick, or could have age thickened, this grease also covered the circlip on the end of the master cylinder, I don't think this is red rubber grease, is it normally like this? or should it be the red 'stuff'? can I use gp grease in this area and red grease behind the circlip washer ie where the piston moves back and forth? sorry if I appear stupid/thick, but its about 20 yrs since I last overhauled a master cylinder etc and memory of the last time is very dim and distant!

You can use rubber or silicon grease. Silicon won't harm anything but I wouldn't mix them, that might be what the white is.

The only white grease that I have is waterproof for use on outboard motors. As my previous comment I would only use the red rubber grease where it may come into contact with the sides of the master cylinder bore. The only reason I would put it on the servo plunger is to eliminate any possibility of friction there. Again use very sparingly!

Yeap, used tubs of the white stuff on pump glands in the dirty water industry, sewage treatment!

There is a big difference between grease that is intended to lubricate rubber parts that come into contact with hydraulic oil. Red rubber grease is essentially inert, and is intended as an assembly lubricant only, hydraulic oil is in itself a lubricant once an assembly has been completed. Anyone who has spilt hydraulic oil on their paintwork will know how corrosive it can be.

Silicone grease, intended for water pumps etc is essentially a water repellant, helping to reduce corrosion as well as lubricate.
In terms of brake calipers, it is ideal for slider pins etc, that don't come into contact with hydraulic fluid but are exposed to copious volumes of road surface water.

Of course any application will differ depending on its intended environment. There are many different materials that colloquially get called rubber, many of them only bear a cursory resemblance, the appropriate materials and lubricants need to be carefully selected.

accepted, the grease I refer to has not/will not come into contact with the sliding bits which are lubricated by red rubber grease. the grease has been used around the sealing or mating faces of the servo unit and the mounting flange of the master cylinder, as you and greyv… have said perhaps it was originally used as a waterproof barrier to prevent/reduce water ingress into said chamber ie on the front of the servo unit and behind the master cylinder. There is still a channel for hydraulic fluid to drain if the piston seals begin to fail!

For general info, red rubber grease PFG102 has now been superceded by PFG110 which is white , least that's the situation here a la frog and in a google search!
