Rear Axle Ford Replacement.

I am stuck at the moment in getting the rear hubs off my Marina axle. In case you ask I have used a lot of propane, a 15 ton hydraulic puller and pneumatic impact driver. as the diff is also whining i'm

thinking of scrapping it and replacing with a small Ford axle.

My question is which is the best to use? It looks as if the Escort Mk 1 is a straight swap. I'm not over worried about ratios as these can be changed but would prefer a good choice out of the box.

It’s a question of the devil and the deep blue sea.
As I have already explained, going anything other than BL presents you with the problem of having different front and rear PCD, more expense, if you can find commercial front hubs to match the Escort rear.

The Escort MK1 is not a straight swap spring hangers are very different.

Removing the bearings from Marina halfshafts is not easy 15 ton is not necessarily enough, never has been. Excess heat can destroy the temper of the half shafts. I have seen 20 ton and beyond.

A whining diff can be replaced by a TR7 4 speed one from Rimmer Bros. It’s a proven route and a quick swap.

If you go Escort, I could be fasinated to follow your progress.

I went down to an old style garage that I was told had a press and they charged me a £5 a bearing to take off and put the new ones on.

If you need new bearings, I can recommend Bearing Traders just round the corner from me in High Wycombe.

Make sure you get the correct measurement.

Thank you both for your advice. I guess my next move is to take the half shafts out and try to get them pressed out at possibly a commercial vehicle garage.

Out of interest though which Ford axles have been used as a conversion ?

what you need is a Triumph hub puller mind you I think this one was one he did earlier!!!! Impact driver helps aswell!

The standard Triumph hub puller does not fit around a Marina shaft without adapting, it only really does half the job, you still need to pull the bearing off. Only really worthwhile if you intend on doing the job more than once
The standard 3 leg puller will not do the job.
PlusGas and a 20 ton press should get both disassembly and reassembly done.
I found an old tractor mechanic working out of an old chicken shed, who happily did several of mine for a few beer tokens complete with a free cup of tea.

The hardest bit I found was pressing the bearing back on.

"Press the bearing onto the shaft so that the distance from bearing to threaded end of shaft is 2.84 in or 69.4 mm"

It covers the little known changeover of Keyway and Oil seal sizes. I found an axle, that had one of each.

That's a lovely hub puller but that hub came off incredibly easily in the video. I'm waiting for a set of bearings and seals and hope to have time this week to take them to an agricultural engineers outside Chichester.

They were on eBay sold by "Automotive Parts Specialist" in Leeds and the part number is FBK068. I hope they are correct when they arrive. I have had very good service for bearings and seals from Bearing Boys in the past. also do Oilite bronze bushes and so on.

eBay message today cancelling that order as they cannot supply, I'll try TR7 4spd parts and if not buy the items individually. Realised that I couldn't press off the hub in a pillar press when I took it in to work to try on a 10 ton press (that I knew would not be powerful enough) as the brake backplate prevents support. Tried to get the bearing off but without success so I'll cut that off with a grinder and chisel when I get time.

Do you know which of the two sizes of seals that you need?

Rimmer Brothers list them as in stock. Might be more expensive, but they have them.

Thank's Steve. I had a look at Rimmers website and the TR7 4speed hub they illustrate looks like it's the same as the 10cwt Marina van which might mean the internal diameter of the seals and bearing are different.

Hopefully tomorrow I'll get one bearing off and can see the reference on the outer seal. I've been delayed by the twin evils of work and gardening !

On Listerjp2's reccomendation I'm going to order a set of seals and bearings from ANG classic parts on eBay which are for the saloon axle that I have.

Did a bit of investigating Ford rear axles and the Escorts appear to be two inches too short but the Cortinas seem to be suitable although still unsure about the spring spacing. Lot's of available ratios and not expensive.
