As you may have seen on another thread I have managed to find a as new Marina based Marlin SWB. It has come with a Marina 1300 engine and gearbox. Does anyone know whether there is somewhere I can get it sorted for unleaded or indeed buy an unleaded head and most important at what cost? If this can be done is there anything else I need to do to sort out timing and such like?

Have you considered using a fuel catalyst such as the Broquet. You just drop them in the tank or fit them into a fuel line. (http://www.broquet.co.uk) I think the cost is ?50-?60. If their blurb is to be believed (and I say if!) you may not need to mess about with the valve seats or the timing and can run your car on cheap supermarket unleaded. Has anyone any experience of these as I was considering buying one even though my car has been converted? I know they claim to increase the octane rating of fuel and my car runs better on higher octane such as Shell Optimax.

Many Thanks for the information. I like the idea of the catalyst. I to would be interested if anyone has used one and whether it does what it says,

Don't bother doing anything with the head until it needs a rebuild, valve seat wear takes many thousands of miles to occur , the big problem is premature detonation with low octane unleaded, use a combined lead additive/octane booster with normal UL and it works out a lot cheaper (on older engines you still need the octane boost with UL unles you retard the ignition a lot and lose power and efficiency enven with an unleaded head). We use a product from Lucas Oil at work but Castrol and Millers do a lead replacement and octane booster in one .

I would agree with Matthew's posting, but if you do go ahead take a look here: http://ferriday.co.uk/unleaded/overview.shtml
They only do benchwork/machining so you'll need to remove the head & their carrier will come & get it. I was quoted ?220 plus ?45 return carriage for my Ford RS.(I'm sticking to Octane booster for now though)There are garages still supplying LRP (one in Marlow apparently)see:
