Sergio in Italy (he who made the Alfa replica from Marina based Roadster) modified the headlamp attachments on ch2778 before he converted it to the Alfa.
He used parts from a 1930s Fiat, but believes that several 1930s era cars had the same idea.
I don't know about the long term structural integrity of a headlamp bar-less car, and wonder how strong the inner wings would be to support these, but it
