  • Spare wheel cover...

Does anyone have, or has anyone made a cover to go over the spare wheel on the rear tub?

I'm thinking I may forgo a spare and use the space with a cover as 'boot space', has anyone done that on a Sportster, or Cabrio?

Failing that, one of those nice Marlin embossed covers as on the diesel demonstrator. I have treat to contact Kevin at marlin, no luck. I suppose making a 'big disk' can't be that hard if I want to.

    thanks,
    David.

    Re: Spare wheel cover...

It a bit scruffy now as it is 11 years old, but scroll down a bit on this page https://www.marlinownersclub.com/for...el+brake+light and you can see a cover my wife made.
I cut a disk of hardboard and Sandie cut an oversize disk of leather cloth and a long strip wider than the width of the tyre and sowed the strip around the edge of the disk. The bottom edge of the strip was folded over so a length of cord could be passed all the way around. The two ends of the cord go through a lace lock, so when in place the cord can be tightened and hold it all in place.

There was a fibreglass spare wheel cover available for the Sportster - it wasn't the best of fits though and you could only get a space saver spare under it.
There is a pale blue Sportster where the spare wheel cover was cleverly hinged to reveal access to the boot space.

There are lots of spare wheel covers on the internet, also hardcovers for 4X4s.

I have the factory wheel cover on mine, the fit as mentioned is not the best but it's OK. I no longer keep the spare wheel under it though so it would be better as boot space. However that would need another trip to a paint shop. For a spare I used a space saver from a Golf - 4x100 and slim enough to fit under the cover. There is a threaded rod fibreglassed into the middle over the cover and bolt is used to hold it on inside the tub.

              Re: Spare wheel cover...

Not sure if the hard cover is the same as on the Cabrio, but the principle is the same. As there is only space for a space-saver under the cover, what do you do with the standard wheel if you have to change it??? It (or the cover) ends up on the wife's lap!!! On my Cabrio, I made an extension for the bolt, so the cover could be put back over a standard wheel, albeit spaced off the boot. At least Caroline won't end up with the dog and a wheel on her lap!
