  • Fuel Tank

It appears that the seam is leaking on my fuel tank. How easy is it to remove the tank and does any body have an idea as to the procedure?

I suspect it is not going to be easy!!!

    Thanks

    Re: Fuel Tank

Should just drop out if you can reach all the mounting bolts. You'll need to remove the floor section at least...but you might be lucky and not have to remove the entire tail moulding, though that would make it easier.

Welding is obviously a big no-no...Frost Restoration sell various compounds (POR 15?) which can be used to repair tanks. Can't recall how much these go for...I think you need 2 or 3 different sorts (cleaner/sealer etc).

As for replacement I doubt you'll find a new Escort van tank but you never know, if not the only other option would be a custom built tank unless anyone knows of another production tank which fits.

    God luck..!

Hi Chris. Suggest you try local motor factors. I expect you will get a tank for an Escort van.

            Re: Fuel Tank

Steve Holder (Fourtune Engineering) makes custom tanks that fit straight into the angle frame, thereby eliminating all the nasty gaps around the "standard" Escort tank. A squirt of foam all around (between frame and bodywork) and the days of mud and gunge coming up into the "boot space" are over. Steve normally makes the tanks quite large-and-heavy to suit trials cars but I'm sure anything is possible. A really worthwhile mod. Andrew.

Thanks Andrew, I have managed to find an aluminiun tank that with a frame made up will slot in niceley.

However, the other problem I have been suffering with after running over the original petrol cap, is fuel coming up the filler neck, I have fitted a threaded ferrule and Aston Cap but it still tends to leak as the Caps dont tend to seal effectively, I currently have a "bung" stuffed in the neck. Do you have any alternative idea's?
              Cheers Chris
