  • Back on the road

Today I spent £345 on road tax for our Berlinetta, Gwynevere before our first trip out since September.
It was a lovely sunny day although still cold and it was great to be out in an open top car again. We did a 41 mile circular route, collecting an oil filter and cambelt kit from motor factors in Matlock and continuing to Sheldon for lunch.
Has anyone else been out today?

Yep, went to the regular monthly Classics Car Meeting at Haddenham. Some 107 cars of all types and years. Raised £121 for Heartbeat Haddenham who buy and maintain the Defibrillators in the village, not bad considering we don't charge for the event. Had to scrape the ice off the windscreen inside and out and got brain freeze on the way their.

Just an enjoyable hour in the sunshine through the local lanes. Second run of 2025. It was therapeutic..

Nice, I took a trip around the local roads in the Sportster on Saturday, very cold but sunny!

Sketch as in the shady damp bits so promptly ordered new tyres and wheels as I'm going up a size to 16 where I can get good rubber. Should get those in a couple weeks.

Took the Cabrio out for a pre MoT test run which is in a couple of days time. All seems ok. Road tax due at the end of the month (£345 which is more than I spend on fuel some years!) Oh well!!

It seems weird when insurance is less than the tax! Even on my daily the insurance is now less than the tax.

A short run in the countryside ( 11 miles) on Thursday morning in cool but sunny weather for Gwynevere's MOT. I still go back to the garage near where I used to live for MOT on my Marlin. I have been going there for the last 32 years.

Taxed, then took ULA to local welder/race tuner guy to discuss having a stainless exhaust system made up.

Noticed water temp low, so stripped pipes various to expose thermostat. Replaced same as well as cracked looking heater hose. Very pleased with myself went for a quick test - no ign warning light?

Quick play with multi-meter shows bulb OK and about 8volts on the field terminal, but no output at all!

No one open on the weekend, so off to ‘Alts & Starts’ on Monday with cheque book!

We had another run out in ideal weather at the weekend with a round trip of approximately 160 miles and an overnight stay near Wrexham with friends.

Gave mine a wash today after a trip the Halfords for brake fluid. Waiting on new wheels and tyres still so driving a bit more cautiously still.

Tyres look a bit hard? What pressures do you run them at?

Yet another run out, this time 50 miles, to meet friends for a pub lunch at Shardlow. This time the temperature was colder but still enjoyable.

Yeah they are set a bit higher than I normal run at 1.6 bar in that photo, which is higher than normal, been trying a different pressures.

However the front tyres are 17 years old and the back ones I think 11 which is the main issue.

Maybe. However a suggestion meantime. Try 20psi all round. (Mark at Marlin said 18psi for my Hunter. I use 19psi and pump them up when they drop to 18psi.)

Hopefully you have adjustable shocks? If so, count the clicks as you wind them down to fully soft and write it down for reference. Then stand on the bumpers and “bounce” the car. Wind the adjusters up one click at a time until the shox just “catch” the double bounce. Note that these clicks are an adjustment NOT a calibration, so don’t be surprised if the clicks are different, both side to side and front to rear. Then go for a drive on the same road and please report back what you find. Peter.
