The clutch cable on my Cabrio has started to creak a bit, and although it's not urgent I would like to be able to renew it. On investigation, there is very little slack and so I can't see a way of releasing it from either end. I tried holding the pedal down and wedging the release lever with a piece of wood between it and the hole in the bell housing, but when I lifted the pedal the auto-adjust gadget auto-adjusted and kept the cable tight. Does anyone have any advice please?

If you lift the pedal as high as possible the pawl on the automatic adjuster should disengage from the teeth on the ratchet. I have changed several clutch cables over the years and although in the manual it says use a block of wood to hold the pedal up, I have found it better to tie some thin rope between the pedal and the steering wheel. I hope this helps.

Brilliant, thanks very much. I was able to pull the outer far enough away to squirt some silicone spray into it. No more creaking!
I feel like a twerp for not looking at the Haynes manual first, but thanks again.
As we used to say when I was working, "as a last resort read the instructions".
