It depends on the engine and the age.
My 1984 2 ltr uses a Weber ADF twin choke downdraught carb.
The choices range from Weber DMS & ADF to various versions of the Solex C34.
The engine can be run on single or twin sidedraught Webers & Dellortos providing you have the right manifold. These are often available on Ebay.
Check the slow running jet - if the tiny rubber o-ring is damaged, the mixture will be messed up. My auto choke was being jammed closed by the screw that holds the throttle open when cold. It was not sat on the cam and slid down the side jamming it open. VERY rich running. Simply bent the lever to fix.

My 1600 runs an ADF twin choke. It is much better with a Pipercross filter on it rather than the very small filter on car when I bought it. Ran well on Lands end. Martin
