  • PINTO ENGINE MISFIRE ON TICKOVER.HELP !!!

    HELP WANTED.
I have a 2lt Pinto fitted and was newly rebuilt 700 miles ago and after a blast out around the lakes yesterday the engine was misfiring on no 4 cylinder at tickover and the idle speed had increased to 1000 rpm. It seemed as it was runing on 3 1/2 cylinders then when you rev it up above 1500rpm it was ok. Replaced plugs, leads check valve clearance, checked aldon ignition system and swoped dizzy and cap, convert back to points. Still no improvement. Removed cyl head and noticed that no 4 cyl exhaust valve almost white and all the cyl valves are a brownish color. removed valves and ok relapped and refit to cyl head. Pistons and rings are ok as new 700 miles ago. Cyl head, inlet and exhaust gaskets were ok.No cracks in head or between valves.Ready to fit cyl head again, has anyone any ideas before i refit the head.

    Cheers........Bob

That sounds like either the exh valve wasnt seating or was running hot due to an air leak(hence the light coloured valve, check the manifold flange). Or perhaps the inlet valve wasnt opening enough(too big clearance)causing a weak mix on the one cyl,Also make sure you havnt got an air lock in the head causing local hot spot.I would have a very close look at that no 4 exh valve it does sound like its not seating properly.
Ben Caswell probably not the last word on anything here!!

The Pinto behaves in this way when it is pulling air from somewhere

check your servo pipe union where it screws into the manifold, and check the pipe to the servo. if the servo is leaking, it feeds air straight to number 4 cyl on tick over.

Re: PINTO ENGINE MISFIRE ON TICKOVER.HELP !!!

I could not find the drop down that said (used to be a member) I lost interest in the club when there was a rather large notice in the mag saying that 144 people had not renewed their membership, the only thing missing was nah nah nanah nah, followed by the followlng year when 100 did not renew. And then there was the great wooden floor debacle, boring. So when the club gets back to being a motor orientated mag and not a social and contact mag I might reconsider, incidentaly I do belong to Morris Marina club, visit that site for Marina based marlins, they only talk about cars not how many bottles of wine they have consumed.

Re: PINTO ENGINE MISFIRE ON TICKOVER.HELP !!!

One of the reasons the club exists at all is that we as members share an interest in the cars we drive, that doesn't mean that we cannot converse about other subjects. The topics may not be what YOU would prefer to see ,in which case why not join the club and do some of the articles yourself,I'm sure Sue would appreciate your imput and it would give those that contribute to the magazine on a regular basis a well deserved break [no offense intended] I've found in life if you don't happen to see/like what you get get of your butt and stop complaining. How about it?

Sue was just been polite and asking if you had seen the new pop up box the encourages people to join the owners club, this has just been installed on the forum and encourages non members to join and I totally agree with Alan?s words, I think you are totally wrong about the Marlin owners Club in every way, The reason I am a Marlin owners club member is to share my interest with like minded people who have a love for Marlin?s and there workings. The knowledge in the club is second to none and this helps the next generation of Marlin owners that have seen and bought a Marlin but not sure what it is or what it?s made out of. The club is well run and well organised perhaps if you attended one of the Marlin driving weekends you would see that the club is motor orientated (your words) and not what you say a social and contact mag (again your words)!!!!!!!!!nah nah nanah nah

Perhaps Phil, you could have let us know what your feelings were rather than skulk off and lose interest. You obviously have enough interest to look in on the Forum. I often ask people for technical articles but if they don't get submitted members will continue to read about the superb social aspect of the club which is kept alive by open minded members, happy to welcome in any new or previous owners who want to actively contribute to the club. It's a pity those who moan about the lack of technical articles don't get off their butt and send something in as it usually triggers others to do the same. We have many silent members who may well feel the same as you but if they don't submit anything I can't publish them. I hear from other silent members who are perfectly happy to have the magazine as it is. I would love to receive more technical reports as I realise the club is a pretol head club as well but there are all sorts who make up the club and some like it is as is, others prefer more tech talk, we try to please all but the tech minded folk also have to contribute if the we are to have a truly generic magazine. Anyone is welcome to take on the magazine and try to change it, as long as they have the committment to do so. In the meantime, I shall continue to write about our social gatherings and run any article that is submitted, social or technical.

From my experience we only have nice people in the Marlin Owners Club.

This website is an excellent resource where there is always somebody willing to help us less able but equally keen Marlin Owners. I look forward to the arrival of our club magazine. My wife knows I am going to disappear for an hour when it drops through the letterbox.(She's glad I'm out of her way!)I think the mag is a perfect mix of chat and motor orientated information. Sue - I like reading about your kitchen floor and your wipers, thermostat, wheels etc. Keep up the good work, please.

Thanks to those few dedicated members who give up their valuable time to make this club one of the best run I have seen.

Well said. Please, please do not change it. This forum is one of the very good reasons I am a member. Sometimes it is good to inject humour, comments etc that are not all related to Marlins. We all have one thing in common, our love for the wee beasties.
