  • Fuel pump choice?

I am going to be running a ford 2.0 DOHC (I4) engine and have fitted an escort mk1 van fuel tank but modified the sender unit to incorporate a fuel pump from a Rover V8 (Sd1). With me so far?
Because I am now going fuel injection, I dont think the SD1 pump will supply the pressure I need. SO - is it swirl pot and new pump for the fuel rail(if so any recomendations on pump?) or could I simply use a sierra sender/pump unit in the tank? (if so from which model) The tank doesnt have any baffles in it so may give problems when fuel is low?
    Any help gratefull recieved (again).
    Cheers

    Re: Fuel pump choice?

Hi Cameron...sounds like you're making good progress..!

Assuming the SD1 pump is a low pressure pump you'll need a high-pressure pump (3 bar...and fuel goes a long way at 3 bar...be careful) for the fuel rail. A swirl pot is definitely recommended to avoid starvation on cornering with less than a full tank.

I reused my old low-pressure pump to feed a bulkhead-mounted pot, which then gravity feeds (with a bit of suck) the high-pressure pump to the rail; then a return from the rail to the pot and a return from the pot to the tank. Before I replaced the rear floor you could hear the fuel draining back into the tank.

The high-pressure pump came from flea bay and is rated at 125(?) litres per hour which should be fine for a nasp 2.0. The code is E10001 and if you search on ebay you'll probably find one listed...its a replacement unit and covers various Saab & Porsche models.

    Cheers

Cheers Jez, I will go that way then, I reckon the SD1 pump will be haigh volume but low pressure. Was hoping to find a way around using a swirl pot - running out of room in the engine bay now!!! Is your in the rear? What capacity is it? ANd how's progress with yours coming along?

        Re: Fuel pump choice?

All running and finally screwed back together...! Ready for MOT & mapping once I rebleed the brakes and adjust one of the wheel bearings.

My swirl pot is a 1 litre job and mounts on the engine bay bulkhead...where the battery used to be (battery now in boot adjacent to tank). Room is extremely tight...the low-pressure pump sits down on the NS chassis rail and the high-pressure is the other side of the engine, so my high-pressure circuit is absolutely minimal.

Keith is right...some sort of folding bonnet side would be more than a nice to have...

Maybe I can pop over and have a looksy sometime..?

Of course - any time Jez - though its not pretty. You have been going great-guns to get it all sorted - hats off to you! I could fit a swirl tank on the bulkhead in front of the driver (that was where I was going to put the expansion tank) and the pump and filter below so it would only have a couple of feet to get to the fuel rail. Will then resite the expansion tank. I am thinking vaseline and a mallet to get it all in!

btw Jez, was it you who said the sierra sender unit (with its return inlet) is a direct fit in the esscort van tank? Or am I completely wrong?

Credit is due to Alan Hogg (I think) for that piece of advice...which I happily made use of. Works fine as well, though getting the right terminal for the Marina guages was trial and error.

I used a Sierra sender in the Escort tank to provide the return. Facet Red Top pump and swirl pot in the space behind the seats and a Sytec high pressure pump at the front - universal pumps available reasonably cheap on eBay.

                  Cameron,
Just as an aside do you know where the engine number is located on the DOHC engine? I just went for an IVA test and the tester wanted the engine number so he could do the appropriate emmisions test. By showing him the Haynes manual he agreed that it was a carb version of the engine and did the test for that. The next problem I can forsee is trying to get it registered with no visible engine number.
I think it may be on a paper label on the front of the engine block but mine is illegible...

Hi Chris - yes its a paper label on the front with a barcode - stupid idea huh? I will ask my neighbour (a ford technician) if there's another way of finding out. btw - i suppose you know of this website already... http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/index.html I found it very useful.

http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/technical.htm is the bit where it has all the engine details etc :-) Glad I may have been useful for once!
