In Order of financial outlay....
Roadster options....
MX5
Sigma (inlet on the passenger side so no need to move steering column)
Duratec (inlet on the passenger side so no need to move steering column) - Also 6 speed GBox from MX5 mk3 fits.
Honda S2000 (inlet on the passenger side so no need to move steering column)
Ford Cosworth Turbo / non turbo (inlet on the passenger side so no need to move steering column)
Cabrio / Berli....
BMW - Great relaxed / powerful / economical engine. Perfect for the style of car. No other choice in my opinion.
Although the volvo T5 / T5R has an easy RWD conversion. Hooligans at the ready.
Mazda V6 RWD conversion available. See Locost forum.
Ford Cosworth Turbo - just turn up the boost :-)Last edited by jon_cox; 17-05-13, 12:59 PM.Mk2 SWB Marina Roadster with a 1800 Fiat Twin Cam engine and 5 speed Abarth gearbox built in 1987

Re: What engine would you use today
Currently restoring my Sierra based Berlinetta. Original Rover V8 out Vauxhall C20XE in. Only down side is no glorious V8 sound, but performance and MPG should be at least on par if not better. The main problem I had with the V8 was lack of room for a big enough radiator.
