Sounds like a great day out but I can imagine your teeth would be ready to fall out after pave'. Probably the fuel smell is fuel washing up to a leak around the top of the tank like fuel gauge, filler pipe or rotten vent pipe.

For the sort of temperatures in Italy a bigger radiator for a 2 litre or 2.5 litre car might be better and having a manual switch to switch on the fan as soon as you hit traffic would help to prevent the engine building up excess heat.

They have distance between holes 3,75".
