New to Kit Cars, so bought two....

    New to Kit Cars, so bought two....

    Hi Everyone,
    I've purchased two Marlin LWB Roadsters via in a red wine moment that are currently being dug out of a barn in north Wales and deposited here in the Midlands.
    With a hazy head and slow realisation what I have done, it seemed prudent to join the Owners club and see what I'm in for, and hopefully a lot of help.
    Whilst no stranger to working on cars, these are my first Kit Cars and intend to start a thread in the projects section documenting my lack of progress in the coming weeks/months/years.

    The first car is a Blue 1988 V8 hybrid, Q399 URL which, I am starting to realise is a bit of a celebrity, being a Which Kit Centerfold Girl in June 89.
    Time has not been kind to her and what isn't broken or missing has a thick layer of bird poop.
    She was last on the road in 2006.

    The second is a Red 1800 (Marina) car which has a very detailed history file including acres of receipts etc from the build.
    I'm still waiting delivery (Hopefully tomorrow) to see how good? this one is.

    Hopefully fellow members will be kind to me and help out with the no doubt barage of supid questions I am about to ask in the very near future.

        At least you seem to have a nice chair to sit and look at it. I had a 'Red wine moment' Many years ago, only mine was 'Day Nurse', a brilliant mood enhancer. I bought an almost derelict Landrover. I thought that a couple of months would get it up and running. Two and a half years later it was! Ten years ago I would have loved that V8 project! Good luck, keep calm, drink tea and don't be afraid to walk away for a while to look at it from a distance. It will be good.

          Yeah the Wife said I was spending so much time out there, she had them added to the garage so she can sit and chat whilst I "fix something".

          The second Marlin turned up last night, or should I say this morning as it was 12:30am when the truck arrived.

          I'm told that this one runs. I chose not to treat the neighbours to this audible delight and pushed the car into the garage, followed by a five second inspection, deducing the paint looks like truck bed liner, none of the electrcs work, and when sitting in the drivers seat, my head is above the top of the screen.
          This one is as sad as the first.

          I think I paid too much........

          Next job, go through all of the cardboard boxes and work out what I haven't got.

                Well, that's filled up the workshop quite nicely. Nice collection of Snap-on boxes! The Red Marlin looks almost ready for the road, still time to get some miles in, while you plan the V8. V Jealous!

                    Oh yes they did fill the place instantly.
                    I had all of my current projects laid out in their own spaces, but then I found out I had to get these cars within a couple of days, so tidiness went out the window and now everything is in piles and my 72 MGB is doing a rather good impression of a cupboard.
                    The blue boxes aren't snap-on, they were a job lot of damaged returns (unknown make) which I have put together to make the two rolling long benches in the picture, a really useful sized moveable island bench down the other end and a couple of standard roller boxes.
                    Marlin Two (the red one) is a long way from being roadworthy. a quick assessment this evening shows:
                    Brake servo has been deleted and not in a good way, brakes are useless. Drivers seat is a weird center seat from a MPV, and way to high, I look over the windscreen, lights don't work, there are no wipers, it looks like there is an entire marina wiring loom hanging out of the dashboard. Front suspension knocks, rear suspension knocks, anything made of rubber has turned to a sticky black gloop, handbrake comes all the way up and you can still push the car, headlights fall out of the pods, the tyres could be the 1988 originals, thee are no door handles or catches, and the paintjob has to be seen to be believed.
                    In its favour, the car starts on the button and sounds healthy. I have a couple of overdrive gearboxes lying under the MG and there is a twin 1 1/2" SU set up in the shed somewhere.

                    Its going to take more than a couple of weekends to get this one ready for an MOT assuming I can find parts for a 1970 Marina 1800
                    Still if it was easy there would be no fun !

                      welcome to the Marlin world i hope things go well for you and there are many members that can help what part of the country are you in iam building a v8 at the moment

                        That red one has the makings of a good car just because it has the Cosmics on it, where they called that, am I thinking of something else?

                        - 4th owner of Q309 RNV, an early Cabrio built by Bob Copping, owned Doug & Liz Billings for 16 years
                        - 9th Custodian of JRR 929D, Triumph Vitesse based special Paul Moorehouse built prior to the Triumph Roadster kits.
                        - 8th owner of Roadster chassis number 2395. Now owned by Barry!
                        - Builder of chassis number 2325 (PKK 989M) in the mid 80's. Now owned by Eric & Lynne.

                              The spare doesn't look like it has ever been used, the tyre still has all of the bobbles on it, the four on the car also look nearly new, but they could all be 35 year old?
                              Job for yesterday was to take a look at the wiring, the car would start but nothing else worked. After removing the dash, I could see why.

                              So a couple of hours later, Wiper motor works, side lights work, many yards of cable. dodgy tape joints and general electrical detritus removed so it looks a little better.

                              My big job is to sort out the brakes. The specialist servo delete kit that is fitted worries me a little......

                              Does anyone have any ideas on what I should have instead of a lump of rusty plate?
