OK bit reluctant to post this but I had to tell someone.

The Marlin failed her MOT.

Believe me I am the happiest person in the world.

She only failed because the handbrake cable broke and a slight leak from one of the brake pipes.

My mechanic John is going to sort them for me and I will be driving the beast on Monday.

I can't stop smiling,

John took me out on a 10 mile run and she doesn't rattle, she steers well, brakes well and sounds absolutely glorious.

Now for a bottle of wine and try and wipe the smile off my face

Well done Adrian, would be interested in which HB cable broke ? the primary or the rear cable and where did it snap??

Done better than me then. MOT station failed my G reg (age related plate) Cabrio on emissions because the date of first registration was 2009 and that was the standard they appiled.. Wouldn't budge on the issue despite it having passed every year before. Even worse if you look at the emissions consulatation document which has a get out clause in it he still wouldn't budge as it was not part of the official MOT manual.
Really not sure what to do next. My V5(c) does not define the emissions it is required to have.
Anybody know a decent MOT station in the south west?

Sorry to hear about your MOT failure. I have booked my 1996 Hunter into Somerton Motor Co. Ltd 01458 274455 for a MOT in 2 weeks time. When I spoke about a couple of advisories last year from a Ford Garage, he said they were being "picky" as the Ford garage offer cheap MOTs but fail cars for the work !!!! Somerton Motor Co service and repair Modern, Classic and American cars. I will post what happens. I have posted before that the Ford garage wanted to fail the Hunter as there is no engine number and they wanted to test it as if it had a Catalyst. I tried to say Kit Cars made before 1998 do not have to pass emissions, only smoke test. David.

Thank god mine is on a 78 plate so not to many hurdles to jump through.

Hope you get it MOT'd at a station that is more attune to kit cars.

The mechanic that gets mine done goes with the car and sits there waiting/watching.

Just one of the benefits of a "Q" plate , visual only on the emissions, although I do get a print-off of the actual readings.

Sorry to hear that Chris.

It comes down to the changes they introduced in the revised mot from 20th May 2018 onwards. The mot manuals are up online and explain the changes, anything pre 98 first use is not affected but anything after is either emmisions as per v5 or if not shown, emissions as per date of first use.

For reasons best known to VOSA/DVLA they backtracked on the proposals for the IVA changes and then implemented the MOT changes anyway, crazy.

Are you running a Cat on yours as I would have thought a zetec using closed loop with a lambada and cat would pass the emmisions. It might be worth speaking to omex to see if they can advise.

Mine is due next week its a 97 Hunter and has whilst in my care been tested as such its injected has a cat and easily passes the test, however I did put some diesel in it the other week and fingers crossed it not killed owt

I've a three pronged plan to get over the problem:
1. Talk to Omex: It has a cat and lambda sensor so they may be able to tweak the ECU. I'll take reduced performance over having it parked in a garage.
2. Find a tame tester, as it was originally built with a 1989 carberettor based engine from a 1989 donor. (MOT rules say if you replace the engine then the test is based on the oldest component, I can argue that since it is on a G plate then altough it was registered in 2009 it is really a 1989 vehicle)
3. Try to get DVLA to define the emissions on the log book based on the original engine.

There is one remaining option. Take the engine/gearbox out, scrap the Marlin and try to find a Mk1 or Mk 2 Escort, Midget or MGB to stuff it in.

Well that sounds like they just don't understand the requirements regarding kit cars. I've just had my F reg age related Cabrio tested and it passed emissions with flying colours. Even though the registration date was 2000 the first thing they did was check the age of the original donor (1989) and based the emissions test on that. I'd be thinking of challenging their interpretation if I were you or as you say getting a second opinion.

Wish mine was, I have the wiring almost complete, engine turning over with a spark but my battery is dead after a couple of turns so new battery for me. What power motorbike battery did you use as I’m thinking the same now.

It is an Odyssy PowerVamp PVR25 they have revamped the numbers the equivalent to this is PC545 which is good for engines up to 2000cc's.

Anything up to 3500c's then the PC680 is the baby.

Don't forget the ally box to hold it steady.

You can use these in any orientation.
